Six Songs. Kali (2022)

for clarinet, violin, cello, and piano

This is the third piece I composed for Kali Ensemble. It utilises a specific level of virtuosity in connection with the material the ensemble’s musicians developed. Each song is built around a combination of different ways of measuring time, primarily relying on some physical constraint, such as the duration of a decaying sound, breath, or bow length. Combining them creates a level of complexity that calls for creative listening as the only reliable way of building musical interaction among the musicians.
